We are heartbroken to share the loss of one of our MacPherson’s family. Sylvia Odom, a member of our Suwanee night crew, was killed in her home on Monday evening. Her husband Samuel was also slain. The DeKalb county police have no description of the shooter or any witnesses. A roommate found the couple on Monday night. Our most heart felt sympathies go out to her family, friends and colleagues during this terrible time.

p1000095Many within the industry are saying their goodbyes to Laurent Duthoit, Daler-Rowney’s Vice-President Sales Americas. He has left to pursue new challenges and opportunities. Laurent joined the company 11 years ago at Daler’s UK headquarters and later moved to the USA to take command of sales and marketing for North America . All the best and bon chance, Laurent!

Shelley Mathews

Shelley Mathews, Vice President, Education and Fine Art Channel at Dixon Ticonderoga/FILA will be leaving the company soon. She cited health, wellness and balance of life as the main reasons for her decision. In Shelley’s note to customers she said “The experience at Dixon has been an amazing opportunity to work with an outstanding team and expand my knowledge and skills.  I will always be grateful for all the support that was received from my first day of joining the organization. 

Opus Art Supplies in British Columbia is opening a new store, their 7th, located in historic Maillardville in Coquitlam, BC.


dorrieboydRoyal Talens is excited to welcome Dorrie Boyd as their Customer Service Manager. Dorrie has worked for Alvin for over 14 years, most recently as a Marketing Manager and will apply those skills and experiences to the team while also heading up customer service.

Frances Preston was born 9/19/16 to Alex Preston and Victoria Whitaker. Alex is the Chief Creative Strategist for Jacquard Products in Healdsburg, CA. Congratulations to all including proud grandparents Kathy Brennan and Don Preston of Preston Art in Louisville, KY.

NPR’s All Things Considered! “Skunk Bear” team chases down elemental questions. They recently got a question from the 5th graders at Green Acres School in Lebanon, OR that sent them on a quest to find the origin of pencil lead. “How is a Pencil Lead Made!” showcases the American industrial treasure the General Pencil Company.(fast forward the video to around 2:25)

Reuters reports that Newell Brands Inc (NWL.N), which owns more than 160 brands including Sharpie markers and Prismacolor, said it would sell about 10 percent of its business portfolio as it streamlines its business following its acquisition of Jarden Corp. None of their art and stationary brands will be included in this divestiture. NewellCo

Fun Facts: Did you know that there is an Eberhard Faber building in Greenpoint Brooklyn, NY, a four-story building overlooking the East River near 42nd Street? In 1956, as many of Brooklyn’s manufacturing businesses fizzled out in the wake of World War II, the Eberhard Faber company sold its headquarters  to move operations to Pennsylvania. The senior leadership team at Fila/Dixon Ticonderoga has a plan for their global portfolio of brands that includes recently acquired Daler Rowney, LUKAS, Canson, Lyra Pencil, Maimeri and St Cuthbert’s Paper. The ultimate goal is to stitch all these companies into a global enterprise of popular brands. In North America that means a restructuring of their sales, marketing and logistics efforts to be more coordinated, streamlined and effective. The combined company is moving to a Key Account (KA) organization that will focus on national accounts, wholesalers and independent dealers serving consumers in the Art and Fine Art channel.  In addition, Dixon and its family of companies will support the industry with experts and workshops that foster the arts with children and adults artist. Michelle Montes Conboy has joined their Headquarters group in Lake Mary, Florida near Orlando to work with this initiative as a Professional Artist reporting to the Vice President of Marketing, Carlos Reyes.  Florida-based Sonny Farmer will remain as Sales Rep dedicated to the Fine Art channel.

Dixon’s teams will also support their senior account managers with cross-departmental project management to deliver tools for building customer demand and market development.

Arthur Long, Vice President Fine Art Channel will work closely with MacPherson’s and other key accounts to leverage the strength of longstanding relationships among all the new FILA/Dixon Brands.  Sherri Smith, Sales Vice President, will manage the Hobby Arts & Crafts Retail channels.

Strathmore Introduces “Strathstore” Rewards

Strathmore Artist Papers™ would like to reward retailers, their customers, and store employees by offering unique Strathmore branded promotional items. Retailers can earn points simply by purchasing Strathmore products, and then they can redeem those points for free promotional materials on the brand new “Strathstore” portion of the Strathmore Retailer and Distributor Tool site.


This program is open to all brand rewards customers, iAMart customers, and AGA customers. Point balances will be uploaded into retailer accounts in the Strathstore twice a year (February/August) based on retailer purchases through distribution. This added segment of the Brand Rewards program is an extra benefit for purchasing Strathmore products.


There are a wide variety of products that will be offered in this new point program, all having varying point levels. Some of the promotional items have a direct contribution from artists, including a t-shirt with feature art created by Erik Davis. There is also a limited time offer on a mug featuring watercolor artist Eleanor Mill. Other items are useful everyday products such as tote bags, can koozies, umbrellas and pencil bags, which feature the Strathmore logo. The more retailers purchase of Strathmore products, the more points they can earn and exchange for promotional products!


Products can be used in a variety of ways, depending on the amount of materials earned by retailers. If lots of points are collected and redeemed for items, stores can think about running an in-store promotion to give out those products to their customers. Retailers can even think about taking one item, and running a “giveaway” entry to boost their email/social media following. These items are also great to give to store employees.


Each retailer will need to complete a Strathstore registration form in order to access this special portion of the Strathmore Retailer Tools website. Each retailer will also be asked to designate only ONE authorized agent to redeem points in the Strathstore. This individual will be the only authorized agent to make Strathstore promotional material selections.

Just in time for Winter Back to School, Strathmore is offering a sign-up bonus for a limited time. Complete registration to participate in the Strathstore program before 1/1/2017, and receive 175 bonus points! All documentation and account information must be received by Strathmore prior to 12:00 am 1/1/2017. The project seeks to benefit displaced peoples around the world, with all proceeds going to the International Rescue Committee ( Over one hundred celebrities have donated jeans to the project, including Emma Watson, Sharon Stone, Kate Moss and Tom Waits, to name a few. Each pair of jeans will be hand-painted by Johny Dar and auctioned online at For the project, Johny is using Jacquard’s Lumiere 3D paints exclusively, which Jacquard happily donated. Each pair is a work of art and a stunning testament to Lumiere 3D’s potential. Jacquard is thrilled to be a part of the Jeans for Refugees project and to see functional art of this caliber, done with Jacquard paints, working as a force for good in the world.
