moving-4-2009-020Preston Art Center recently moved its Louisville, KY store to a great new location at 3048 Bardstown Road.  The space had an ample backroom that is being converted to two classrooms with university studio quality lighting. At NAMTA in Louisville next month, Preston’s two locations would be great destinations for art supply retailers to tour. Kathy and Don say, “Come on down!”!

April 2009 News from Chroma

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Chroma is  excited to have a new video on its website,  Bigger and Bolder Watercolors with Atelier Interactive, found at the Chroma Media Library.

chroma

In this 2-part video, Chroma Teaching Artist Barry Sholder demonstrates his method of creating vibrant “watercolor” paintings using Interactive on full sheets of watercolor paper. Bigger and Bolder painting is an Impressionistic style of painting that incorporates very wet paper surfaces and the brilliant characteristics of Interactive’s line of artist acrylics and mediums.  Materials and their use are explained, as well as simple compositional concepts that are easy to understand and executed, to produce beautifully vibrant paintings much like a watercolor … only using acrylics. Perfect for beginners to professional artists who want to explore a new technique, Barry gives step-by-step instructions on how to achieve beautiful, transparent watercolor effects.  We encourage you to check out this video and to tell your acrylic and watercolor customers about it. If you have any questions about Barry’s techniques or wish to schedule a free “Bigger and Bolder” workshop in your store, please contact Kathryn Betz at kbetz@chromaonline.com.  If you would like a copy of this video on a DVD to play at your store, please contact Celia Weber at cweber@chromaonline.com.

Princeton Brush 18th Anniversary “BOGO” Celebration!

Monday, April 20th, 2009

5mk73j_3

Princeton Art & Brush Co. is celebrating its 18th year in business by launching a barrage of new and updated products at NAMTA next month. To start the celebration early, they are offering an additional discount to encourage retailers to promote all Princeton products, sets and open stock, on a Buy-One-Get-One–Free basis.

Princeton President Howard Kaufman says, “Times are tough for all of our customers. That’s why we started 2009 by holding our prices. We now feel it’s our job to help our dealers get more customers into their stores and to encourage those customers to buy more.”

And it’s not just discount. Princeton is providing signage kits including 4-color signs and hardware to attach signage to racks in your brush aisle and on your front doors. Each kit will include a CD-ROM packed with sale-themed graphics to produce your own postcards, bag-stuffers, web ads, and email offers.

The promotion can be run for any 30-day period between May 1st and June 30th. Additional signage is available for stores that prefer to run a “50% OFF” version of the promo, though Princeton recommends the “BOGO” approach. Participation through your MacPherson’s sales rep couldn’t be easier; our reps have all the details. If you’re looking for every opportunity to sell more in this economy, this promotion should be right up your brush aisle.

George Kenneth (Ken) Fullerton 1922-2009
scan0214With great sadness we report the passing of industry great, Ken Fullerton, who died of natural causes at his home in La Canada, CA, on April 12, 2009, surrounded by family. He was 86 years old and was best known as the sales genius behind the iconic Glendale, CA  drafting supply giant, Fullerton Sales.
In 1946, after completing his war service in the navy, Ken joined the family business where he and his two brothers Jack, and Dick shaped and reshaped this dynamic business at the heart of the booming post-war industrial America.  Ken was the consummate sales ambassador for Fullerton, where he led the company to the top rung of our nation’s drafting supply industry. Always known as a ladies’ man, bon vivant and terrific dancer, Ken was in fact the doting husband to Dorie, who sadly died a few years back. They were an amazing team!
In 1987, MacPherson’s acquired Fullerton Sales and we were lucky to have Ken represent us for 10 glorious years. There was no better friend or ally in business. Shed no tears for Ken; instead, he would have insisted that in his honor we all tell a spicy joke, lift a strong cocktail and say a toast to the joys of a life well lived.
Services will be held at La Canada Presbyterian Church, 626 Foothill Blvd. at 2 p.m.  on April 23, 2009.  The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Roze Room Hospice of the Valley who made their lives a lot easier with all their help and support.

Stuart AitkenEncouraged by the initial success of its improved consumer web site, WhereCreativityHappens, Michaels is re-launching the site with designer Jo Pearson in seven new webisodes, each featuring step-by-step instructions for designing one-of-a-kind jewelry, updating outdoor entertaining spaces, etc. Visit www.WhereCreativityHappens.com to check it out. “Our customers are telling us that they want to spend more time on do-it-yourself projects not only to save money but as an inexpensive activity the whole family can enjoy,” said Michaels Chief Marketing Officer Stuart Aitken. “We will introduce a series of new webisodes in 2009, along with in-store events and hundreds of project ideas, to provide inspiration and value to our customers.”

FAQ: Why Can’t I Find Statistics on the Art Materials Industry? NAMTA Knows!!

Friday, April 17th, 2009

1204102007430806The above title is the most frequent question requested by the NAMTA office in Huntersville, NC .  And the answer is simple – because the statistics don’t exist! How can any of us run our business without this crucial information?

NAMTA has the solution, but it needs your help to make it happen! The State of the Art Materials USA 2009 is a landmark report on industry size and trends, business best practices, and the needs and preferences of artists. The more participation NAMTA receives in filling out the survey, the more accurate the data will be.

You’ll get a free copy of the full report as part of your NAMTA membership. Non-members who participate will receive a free Executive Summary. Your responses are anonymous and confidential to Hart Business Research, and will only be reported as part of combined totals or averages.

Please fill out the survey today using either the printed copy mailed to you March 13 or the online editions linked below.

The Big Idea: The 3/50 Project to Help Independent Neighborhood Retailers

Friday, April 17th, 2009

371192861v1_350x350_backWe just received this timely article from Jay Rice at Creative Catalog Concepts showcasing a wonderful grass roots idea to promote  independent, locally owned and operated “brick & mortar” retail businesses. Have a read. You might find it to be something of interest that may help your  business engage customers in this challenging economic environment. Participation costs nothing but a positive attitude!

The 3/50 Project: Saving the Brick and Mortars Our Nation Was Built On

By Cinda Baxter, Founder of The 3/50 Project
4/7/2009

No one needs to tell storefront retailers times are tough; truth be told, you were the first ones to see the mysterious tea leaves, being the closest connection to consumers. As early as last June, stores began seeing serious drops in revenue. Last fall’s “fall” was just the next chapter.

As if that wasn’t enough, you now find yourself stretched across two battlefields—the economy…and the mainstream media, who seems to be hell bent on painting as bleak a picture as possible. Not only does it depress you each time the news comes on, but it depresses your customers, and we all know depressed customers don’t spend.

In the words of Erin Burnett, business news anchor for MSNBC (and my new favorite media voice), “I do think a lot of this is psychology,” referring to how determined the media seems to be to make things sound as hopeless as possible. “I’ve been collecting words the media has been using to describe the crisis: carnage, apocalypse, bleeding, hemorrhaging, crash. There is something to be said for a loss of perspective and a sense of hyperbole that’s taken over.”

Hear, hear.

Folks, it’s time the message changed, and if the media’s not going to do it…well…. Tell me again—who is it that’s closest to the consumer? Who’s going to lift them up and empower them? Yup. You.

Enter The 3/50 Project.

In a nutshell, The 3/50 Project is built on a simple concept—consumer loyalty to independent storefront businesses equals stronger local economies.

Yes, that’s the same message you’ve heard from Buy Local organizations for years. But this has a twist—it’s easy, it’s free, it’s something you can put into motion in under five minutes…and customers love it.

Here’s how it works: You visit the350project.net, download a free flyer, print some out on your color desktop printer, then hand them to customers with their purchases while thanking them for shopping with you. That’s right. No sales pitch. No annual dues. No complexity of any kind. It’s simple…which is probably why it’s taken off like a rocket.

The flyer does all the talking, staring with it’s tag line: Pick 3. Spend 50. Save your local economy:

Pick three locally owned stores you’d miss if they disappeared, then return to them. Say hello. Pick up a little something that will make someone smile. Those purchases are what keeps those businesses around.
If just half the employed US population committed to spending $50 in locally owned stores each month, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. Imagine what would happen if 3/4 of them did that.
For every $100 spent in locally owned stores, $68 returns to the local economy through payroll taxes, property taxes, sales tax, payroll, and other business related expenditures. When purchasing from a chain or franchise, that amount drops to $43; if it’s spent online, nothing comes home.
The key to making this pop is to hand the flyer directly to the customer, not just stash it in the bottom of the bag. Consumers are desperate for someone to tell them they’re appreciated; when you look them in the eye, smile, and thank them personally, things begin to happen. They become more loyal. They tell their friends what a great store you have. They go home and read the flyer, “get” how much control they have over saving a business and saving a community, then start spreading the word.

This is empowerment and evangelistic marketing at its best. And you reap the benefits.

Since the idea first popped up in a blog post mid-March, The 3/50 Project has taken off like a rocket. Not only do retailers “get it,” but so do their community counterparts. Store owners are forwarding them to other types of locally owned businesses. Property management companies are printing them out for all their tenants. Community groups and business organizations are doing the same. There’s even a movie theater in North Carolina showing this on their screens before films begin. Magazines and blogs—both in and outside the gift industry—have recognized the positive impact, and have sung its praises while also praising small business everywhere.

Participants and other supporters of The 3/50 Project will be listed on a special page (as soon as the full site is built out, currently in production), as well as given a member icon for use on their websites and Facebook pages. Window banners are planned…a copy of the flyer suitable for web use on blogs or sites is already available…and that lovely movie screen version is, of course, yours if you need it.

The more visibility, the more consumers who understand the importance of remaining loyal to locally owned stores, then purchasing there.

After all…isn’t that really the goal to begin with?
