Hobby Lobby, the arts & crafts retail chain, filed a lawsuit in the US District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma challenging aspects of the healthcare law known as Obamacare. Chain founder David Green says his Christian-based company should not have to pay for emergency contraceptives like the so called morning-after pill.

Tony Goldman, visionary urban developer and creator of the annual Art Basel event in Miami passed away recently of a heart attack. He was known mostly for his development work in New York’s SoHo area and Miami’s South Beach.

Sue Barnhill

At Michaels, Bill Long, VP of Category Management, has announced his retirement after three years with Michaels. Sue Barnhill is rejoining the Michaels Category Management team as Business Unit General Manager for Frames and International. Sue had been at Aaron Bros for the past two years. Amy Djerf moves from Michaels to take on the role of VP of Merchandising for Aaron Bros. Sam Laboi will be transitioning to a special assignment. Matt Fischer has been promoted to Vice President – Inventory Management.

General Pencil’s Jim Weissenborn was the key consultant for the pencil manufacturing scenes on the recent movie “The Odd Life of Timothy Green”. He worked on several production and design meetings with the film & set leaders. Jim and General Pencil loaned several machines that were once used in General Pencil factory to be used on the movie set. General made the  “Stanleyville” Pencils used on the set, and several props, including General’s® Drawing Kits and General Pencil Historical Documents, were used in the “Pencil Museum” scenes.

Here’s something very cool. Last week California was treated to a victory lap by the space shuttle Endeavor as it took its last ride strapped to the back of a 747. Yvonne at University Art in Sacramento, CA forwarded this photo taken by her husband showing the shuttle above the capitol dome:

Sharpie Fans Make Music at MTV Video Music Awards and Beyond! Sharpie is showcasing the work of some of its most passionate fans in the brand’s first music video! The video, which premiered as a TV spot during the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, features hundreds of images of fan creations set to the music of indie-rock band California Wives. Check it out:

Big Kolo Announcement

We are very excited and pleased to announce that we have finalized an agreement with Kolo for Kolo products to become a brand exclusive to MacPherson’s!

Kolo is a 14-year-old, US-based company that offers top quality albums and accessories for photos and presentation.  Kolo has built a strong brand name with consumers through its attention to every detail in the quality and function of its products.  Kolo needed a strong partner for the distribution and sales side of the business and MacPherson’s was its logical choice. Their goal and ours will be improvements in customer service levels at the retail level with a special emphasis on providing consistently high fill rates. By outsourcing its customer interface, Kolo can focus on its strengths: innovative product development, high quality manufacturing and superior brand management.

MacPherson’s will become the exclusive importer for Kolo in North America, with exclusive distribution to the arts & crafts channel as well as a few other select channels. We have already placed orders for 3 containers to ship directly from the factory in Hong Kong to our warehouses set to arrive in November. As with our other Exclusive Brands, we’ll be implementing increased sales and marketing efforts to broaden Kolo’s exposure to our entire customer base while increasing sales to our existing Kolo customers.  The official transition date is November 15th.

Mixing paints with control and getting predictable results is a skill that takes years to master. It also requires a lot of paint. Golden Artist Colors has decided to cut through this fog with the debut of the Virtual Paint Mixer.

With this fun, unique online tool, artists can mix countless paint colors, developing a feel for the correct proportions and the best colors to use. Photos can be uploaded to match colors and create palettes, getting artists closer to the colors they want faster, saving time, frustration and paint!

Once registered, users can print, e-mail and save reports with formulas and colors needed to guide purchases and direct them to nearby retailers. Just Paint #27 Coming Soon!

We continue to get the seemingly obvious question, “So how long will it take for my paint to dry?” As you know, the answer we’ve committed to is…”It depends.” In this issue of Just Paint, Technical Support experts Michael Townsend and Ulysses Jackson give a more articulate answer to this vexing issue for acrylic painters.

In “The Color Graveyard,” Dana Rice shares why we lose colors and either find replacements for them or commisserate with artists when we’re not successful in doing so.

In “GOLDEN Virtual Paint Mixer: Odyssey of Perspectives,” an article by Christopher Farrell, he walks artists through our journey into color space and the development of the Color MXR, a new virtual tool for color mixing that leverages the paint attributes of the colors in the GOLDEN Acrylic lines.

We’ve included a brief announcement about our new show by Knox Martin, “SHE,” showing at the Sam & Adele Golden Gallery (The SAGG) from October 6, 2012 through April 6, 2013. We’re thrilled to have this powerful artist’s work here!

SHE: Exhibition of Artwork by Knox Martin at Sam & Adele Golden Gallery

SHE is an exhibition of selected works by New York painter Knox Martin, opening at the Sam & Adele Golden Gallery (The SAGG) at Golden Artist Colors, Inc., New Berlin, NY, from October 6, 2012 through April 6, 2013. There is an opening reception for the artist from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Saturday October 6. Knox Martin’s work is in the permanent collections of major museums around the world, including the Whitney, MOMA, Albright-Knox, Hirshhorn and the Corcoran. For more information about the event, go to The SAGG at Golden.
