GOLDEN Introduces Mixing Set Based on Classic Theory

The new Classic Theory Mixing Set from GOLDEN provides an ideal starting place for artists who are interested in exploring a more traditional range of colors. The colors in this set all played significant roles in the painting of the 19th century and earlier. This was a period when pigments derived from minerals, plants, and metals dominated, and just a few early synthetic colors were making their way onto the artist’s palette.

The selection in this set will allow artists to easily mix a wide range of naturalistic colors found in landscape, still life, and portraiture, and provides a balanced approach between opaque and transparent effects central to classical techniques. Underpaintings can be quickly blocked out using mixtures based on Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, and Prussian Blue Hue, while veils of depth and glowing luminosity can be achieved by using Indian Yellow Hue, Alizarin Crimson Hue, and Ultramarine Blue. Viridian Green Hue allows for a wider range of greens, as well as provides a useful compliment for shading many of the warmer reds and browns.

The Classic Theory Color Mixing Set is accompanied by a valuable Color Mixing Guide, with proportion suggestions to step the artist through color exploration and the development of color mixtures. This great resource illustrates the wide range of mixtures that can be achieved using a limited palette of eight colors. This new Classic Theory Color Mixing Set (GD0907-0) begins shipping late August 2012, so please contact your Customer Service Representative for further information.

Flax Art Materials in San Francisco, CA celebrated its annual Kid’s Fest event this past weekend. The theme was “super heroes” and the whole store was decorated accordingly (as were all the staff and vendors who participated). If you are looking for some in-store inspiration, here’s what Flax did:  there were 13 different tables set up for the kids throughout the store where they could learn to draw super heroes, make window clings, get their faces painted and more. Each kid was given a Flax comic book in which they could collect stamps from each table.  When they collected them all, it revealed a secret message and the kids were rewarded with goody bags which included mini manikin key chains donated by Art Alternatives.

The Williamsburg French Earth Colors are Here!

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

Williamsburg is proud to introduce 13 French Earth Colors from the oldest mine and pigment supplier in France. Adding the new French Earth Colors to the famous Italian Earths line reinforces Williamsburg’s commitment to truly unique color offerings for artists.

The 13 new French Earth Colors will expand and provide more depth within the offerings of natural earths coming from regions with historical importance, especially in terms of European art history. They will appeal to painters seeking a broader palette of historical materials; those who want to feel more connected to specific regions and traditions.

At the same time, Williamsburg believes the French Earth Colors are attractive to many modern painters who appreciate that natural earths provide a type of texture and physical presence, as well as a subtlety of color caused by the unique mix of impurities each mining region possesses; something that synthetic iron oxides simply cannot provide.

Supported by a Selected French Earths set (WB6008410), these 13 new colors are available in a free-standing display unit. For Holiday planning, please note that they will be in stock mid-August. For more information, contact your MacPherson’s Sales Representative.
