Hobby Lobby, the arts & crafts retail chain, filed a lawsuit in the US District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma challenging aspects of the healthcare law known as Obamacare. Chain founder David Green says his Christian-based company should not have to pay for emergency contraceptives like the so called morning-after pill.

Tony Goldman, visionary urban developer and creator of the annual Art Basel event in Miami passed away recently of a heart attack. He was known mostly for his development work in New York’s SoHo area and Miami’s South Beach.

At Michaels, Bill Long, VP of Category Management, has announced his retirement after three years with Michaels. Sue Barnhill is rejoining the Michaels Category Management team as Business Unit General Manager for Frames and International. Sue had been at Aaron Bros for the past two years. Amy Djerf moves from Michaels to take on the role of VP of Merchandising for Aaron Bros. Sam Laboi will be transitioning to a special assignment. Matt Fischer has been promoted to Vice President – Inventory Management.

General Pencil’s Jim Weissenborn was the key consultant for the pencil manufacturing scenes on the recent movie “The Odd Life of Timothy Green”. He worked on several production and design meetings with the film & set leaders. Jim and General Pencil loaned several machines that were once used in General Pencil factory to be used on the movie set. General made the  “Stanleyville” Pencils used on the set, and several props, including General’s® Drawing Kits and General Pencil Historical Documents, were used in the “Pencil Museum” scenes.

Here’s something very cool. Last week California was treated to a victory lap by the space shuttle Endeavor as it took its last ride strapped to the back of a 747. Yvonne at University Art in Sacramento, CA forwarded this photo taken by her husband showing the shuttle above the capitol dome:
